Integrity Conference in Peru Brings Together Anti-Corruption Experts from Around the Globe
KKC Partner to Deliver Keynote Address on the Importance of Rewarding Whistleblowers who Report Corruption and Frauds
As a buildup to International Anti-Corruption Day 2018, December 9th, the Office of the Comptroller General of the Republic of Peru is hosting the International Annual Conference on Integrity December 6 and 7 at the Lima Convention Center in Lima, Peru. The conference will convene more than thirty national and international speakers to share the new strategies, approaches and good practices that are used in the fight against corruption.
The conference will host six forums: Promoting integrity in local government; Education for Integrity: Forming agents of change; Transparency, governance and accountability; Uncovering corruption: New technologies and intelligence data to prevent; Mechanisms of social control to prevent corruption; and Policies for the prevention of Corruption: Evidence from empirical research. The panelists from hail from several countries including, the United States, Canada, Korea, Chile, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Sweden, Paraguay, India and Peru will present.
Top whistleblower attorney Stephen M. Kohn will present the keynote address at 9:45 am, following the opening speech by President MartÍn Vizcarra Cornjo. Kohn’s address “Trends in preventing corruption: The value of whistleblowing,” will explore issues of fraud in public contracts, governmental and corporate responsibility, among others. According Kohn, who serves as the Executive Director of the National Whistleblower, "Whistleblowing works. Employees with inside information are the key to fighting corruption. There needs to be strong international cooperation to effectively fight organized crime, stop bribery of government officials and protect natural resources from illegal exploitation."
Stephen Kohn is a founding partner in the top qui tam whistleblower firm Kohn, Kohn & Colapinto, LLP. His primary litigation focus includes representing international whistleblowers under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, tax fraud whistleblowers, qui tam reward laws, the False Claims Act, SEC whistleblowers and IRS whistleblowers. In 2012, the firm obtained the largest qui tam whistleblower reward given to a single individual in history ($104 million to UBS whistleblower Bradley Birkenfeld) and he represents the Danske Bank money laundering whistleblower Howard Wilkinson. In 1988, Kohn helped found the National Whistleblower Center, where is currently serves, pro bono, as Executive Director. His eighth book on whistleblower law is the highly respected The New Whistleblower’s Handbook (Lyons Press, 2017)
"Laws must be enacted that protect the confidentiality of whistleblowers, incentivize and protect employees to report frauds and reward those whose information results in successful prosecutions," Kohn added.
